The World Aids Day is celebrated on 1st December every year. This year marks the 21st anniversary of World AIDS Day.

Started on 1st December 1988, World AIDS Day is about raising money, increasing awareness, fighting prejudice and improving education.

World AIDS Day is important in reminding people and to elevate the awareness of AIDS pandemics has not gone away, and that there are many things still to be done.

* Facts and Figures on HIV/AIDS

  • The disease has killed more than 25 million people between 1981 and 2007.
  • About 34.4 million people around the globe live with HIV/AIDS as of 2007.
  • 2.1 million children has been affected by HIV/AIDS.
  • In 2008, some 2.7 million people became newly infected with virus.
  • In 2008 between  1.7 million-2.4 million died due to AIDS-related diseases.
  • In 2008 around 430,000 children were born with HIV.
  • Since the beginning of the epidemic, almost 60 million people have been infected with HIV
  • Young people account for around 40% of all new adult (15+) HIV infections worldwide.
  • In sub-Saharan Africa the epidemic has orphaned more than 14 million children.
  • AIDS has become the most critical epidemic in the recorded history.

For 2009, UN Secretary-General, World AIDS Campaign and UNAIDS launch World AIDS Day theme of ‘Universal Access and Human Rights’.

The theme has been chosen to address the critical need to protect human rights and attain access for all to HIV prevention, treatment, care and support. It also acts as a call to countries to remove laws that discriminate against people living with HIV, women and marginalized groups.
