The Philippines has been chosen as the third cheapest tourist destination in Southeast Asia in a survey conducted by FinanceAsia on July 13, 2010.  The poll was conducted to find out which Southeast Asian destination offers the best value.

The Philippines is cheaper than Malaysia but more expensive than Thailand and Indonesia.

The survey used the Mandarin Oriental’s rack rates costs in August for its deluxe room.

If the survey used the The Economist’s Big Mac Index, which uses the price of burgers around the world as a light-hearted measure of relative currency values, the Philippines will easily be on top 1 to be the cheapest place for both burgers and hotel rooms.  The survey conducted also noted that Philippine peso  has the advantage of getting cheaper.

Big Mac Index might be better used as a benchmark for tourists to work out how expensive an unfamiliar country is going to be.

I live in the South of Metro Manila and I feel so  proud whenever there’s a new business development in the area.

The latest news that I’ve gathered is that Nestlé Philippines  will invest 4.3 billion pesos  over two years in a new facility  on a 27-hectare site in Tanauan, Batangas.

The new Tanauan factory construction will start this month and the target of completion is on March 2012. It is expected to help spur economic growth in the area, would hire 170 people for the new facility, and generate hundreds of other jobs in other sectors providing the facility with raw materials and services.

According to John Miller, CEO and Nestlé Philippines Chairman, the facility will produce COFFEE-MATE Non-Dairy Creamer and BEAR BRAND Powdered Milk Drink. Mr. Miller said that demand for the two brands, both of which are market category leaders, continues to grow and the investment in the new factory will address the need to increase production.

The Philippines is second biggest market after the United States for Coffeemate, which is currently imported from Thailand.

Nestle Philippines is also upgrading  its equipment and technology in its four existing factories in the country, which are:

  • The Cagayan de Oro Factory which manufactures NESCAFÉ and BEAR BRAND;
  • The Cabuyao Factory which manufactures NIDO, NESVITA, NAN, NESTOGEN, BEAR BRAND Choco, NESTLÉ All Purpose Cream, Ready-to-Drink MILO, BEAR BRAND Sterilized, and CHUCKIE;
  • The Lipa Factory which produces MILO and NESTLÉ Breakfast Cereals; and
  • The recently commissioned Pulilan Factory, which manufactures NESTLÉ Ice Cream and Chilled products.

Nestlé has been in the Philippines as a part of everyday life of many Filipino people for 99 years already. The Company is the second largest taxpayer in the country and is among the country’s top six corporations. In 2009 Nestlé paid the government some PhP10.6 billion in taxes.

Mr. Miller told the reporters,  “We are here to stay. We are investing here and we are investing big time,”.  The chairman also added that, “The investment in the Tanauan factory starts a new chapter in Nestlé commitment to the country, as we look forward to the next 100 years of nurturing Filipino families by offering healthy and tasty products.”

Tap into the “UNLI” Craze

Once there was “Free Refill” then “Bottomless” was born. It became a  household name err a restaurant product specially on drinks. I’m sure you are familiar with “bottomless iced tea”  or “bottomless softdrinks”.

Those words are a thing of the past.

Here’s comes ” UNLI”.  You know the meaning of “UNLI”, don’t you?

Well for the sake of non-Filipino readers of KayaMoPinoy, “UNLI” is the short form of “Unlimited” . Thanks to the mobile or cellular phone service providers, “UNLI” has been nominated for the Word of The Year among others such as “jejemon”.

Globe, Smart, Bayantel, Sun and other providers are competing each other  to grab a bigger  piece of the market. This is the reason why they were all eager to promote this “UNLI” craze.  In the end, it’s the subscribers or end-users who is winning this war. The result is cheaper plans, bigger and better promos and hopefully a better services too!

Other businesses such as those in food industry even tried this “Unli” craze. Some of the restaurants that are using this technique are Abe Restaurant in Trinoma, Best Friends restaurant along Pureza St. cor Magsaysay Blvd. Manila and the famous Mang Inasal.

If you have a business or product that you can offer as “UNLI”, I’m absolutely sure that you will keep your customers happy. We, Filipinos, love this type of offer, don’t we?

Study, learn and apply the profitable lessons from those businesses offering this kind of scheme. Tap into the “unli” craze while it’s hot and who knows, this might be the magic word that your business is waiting for it grow exponentially!

Starting a Booth Size Business

If you have an endeavor to start your very own business, you might think of starting a booth store.

Here are some tips to take:

  1. Research on the products you want to sell An entrepreneur should be knowledgeable of the management process, marketing acts and advertising campaigns in order to start a business or during the instance of only having a notion of it. You can start by attending shows, exhibits, seminars and symposiums in topic of the product or business management itself. This will serve as your base line knowledge for your market.

    Also, remember to ask for the organizer’s mailing list so that you can apply through online, view slides or presentations or send your product commercials. This will budget your time and boost confidence when attending these shows. However, you should be able to pick the right and apt ones for the business you have in mind. For the reason that customers might think that your products aren’t good or pricing is wrong, which in most instant cases this is a false story.  The proprietors have only attended the wrong shows, exhibits, seminars or symposiums for their products.
